Setting Up an Affiliate Program
|
How affiliate tracking works - When a customer visits your site a script is called that puts a cookie on the customer's computer which identifies where he came from. This will be an affiliate id. When an order is placed the shopping cart must notify the affiliate program that an order has been placed and the amount of the order. Normally this is done by sending the user to the affiliate program on your site or displaying a 1x1 image along with the amount. The affiliate program then gets the cookie back from the customer, and credits the affiliate appropriately. There is a slight problem with using this method if the site is not a secure site using ssl. When the customer gets to the point to be redirected back to the affiliate program they will be presented with a popup that says that they are about to be transferred to a non secure system, unless your url supports secure transactions, and is given an opportunity to continue or cancel. If they hit cancel then your affiliate program will not be notified of the order. If the site is using a 1x1 image the customer receives a popup saying that there is insecure information on the page, and once again can cancel out. If the url is a secure url, as indicated by it starting with https instead of http, then these problems do not exist. We have found a way around these problems by sending the information to the affiliate program with a blind post from our system directly to your system that has the affiliate program on it. This happens without any interaction from the customer and thus is much more reliable. However the disadvantage is that to do this way our system must know the affiliate number so it can get passed back to your affiliate program as a cookie. This requires accessing our site through a small perl program that must be put on your site which will acquire the cookie, and send it to King Cart which will then forward it on o the affiliate program.
To set the cart up for an affiliate program enter the url of your order recording script of the affiliate program. I.E. for YourAffiliate program you would enter yoursite.com/cgi-bin/order.pl if the affiliate program order logging is in the cgi-bin directory of yoursite.com. For MyAffiliateProgram you would use https://www.myaffiliateprogram.com/u/[your affiliate id]/adorder.asp and select the 1x1 image. For Interneka Affiliate you would enter: http://interneka.com/affiliate/WIDLink.php and select the 1x1 image. For clixGalore you would enter https://www.clixgalore.com/AdvTransaction.aspx and select the 1x1 image. Your program will be passed the following variables: If "Send Get" or "Redirect" is checked:
If "Throw 1x1 image" is checked then the following defaults are sent:
For Interneka Affiliate you will need to also put 'TotalCost' in the full total or subtotal field depending on if you want the affiliate to work with the full total with taxes and shipping, or the subtotal before taxes and shipping. Put OrderID in for the order number name, and WID for the user ID name. Also put your ID in the ID field. For clixGalore Affiliate you will need to also put 'SV' in the full total or subtotal field depending on if you want the affiliate to work with the full total with taxes and shipping, or the subtotal before taxes and shipping. Put OID in for the order number name, and ADID for the user ID name. Also put your ID in the ID field. If "Redirect to Affiliate Thank You" Page is checked - If you have a secure connection capability on your site then use the full https:// in the above link, otherwise either use http:// or leave the http:// off of the link. If you can use the https:// then the problem with the popup will not occur. The affiliate program will need to provide the thank you page for the order. If "Send Get" is checked - There is no need to tell the affiliate program to go to another or url for the thank you page since our site will provide that. Any text returned by the affiliate program is discarded. This is likely opposite of how your affiliate program says to set it up. We call the affiliate program, instead of the affiliate program calling the cart. It is done that way since the way they normally do it would require you to have a secure ssl site or the customer will get a warning pop up box that they are going to an insecure site and can cancel the transfer to the affliate program. IMPORTANT: To make it possible for King Cart to send the affiliate number to your affiliate order program when using this method you MUST link to King Cart from the server that your affiliate program is on using the script at http://king-cart.com/go_cart. Thus the link on your main site must be on the same site as your affiliate program, and instead of linking to http://king-cart.com/cgi-bin/cart.cgi?store=[storeID] use http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/go_cart?[storeID] instead. This will give King Cart the affiliate number of the customer so it can pass it back to order.pl. After transferring this script to the cgi-bin directory of your server, change the filemod to 755. In telnet this is done by the commmand: "chmod 755 go_cart" for Unix systems. If "Throw 1x1 image" is checked - Enter the url that is used by the affiliate program to throw the image. The url must start with https://, since throwing an image from an insecure page will not work. Use this method for myaffiliateprogram, interneka and clixGalore programs.
